Hurricane Helene’s transition from a tropical depression to a Category 3 hurricane has been recorded as one of the fastest forecasts ever made by the National Hurricane Center (NHC).
According to Sam Lillo, a meteorologist and software engineer at DTN Weather, "The NHC has never predicted a tropical depression to turn into a major hurricane within 60 hours. In fact, the entire forecast for Helene is faster than any other issued for a tropical depression in 36 or 48 hours."
John Cangialosi,
"There is justification for such a forecast," Cangialosi noted. "We are trying to stay ahead of the possibility of rapid intensification before the storm reaches Florida."
