Netflix is moving forward with plans to discontinue its lowest-cost
The streaming giant has started notifying users via on-screen messages about the impending changes. One Reddit user shared a notification from the Netflix app stating: "Your last day to watch Netflix is July 13th. Choose a new plan to keep watching." Users are being encouraged to switch to the cheaper Standard with ads plan or the more expensive Standard or Premium 4K plans.
The Basic plan, which costs $11.99 per month in the United States, has not been available to new subscribers since last year. During its early 2024 earnings call, Netflix revealed plans to phase out the Basic plan in countries where the ads plan has been introduced, beginning with Canada and the UK in the second quarter, and expanding from there. As of May, Netflix reported that its ad-supported streaming tier had reached 40 million global monthly active users, an increase of 35 million from the previous year.
