North Korea said 1.4 million people just enlisted to fight the U.S.

North Korea's

reported that more than 1.4 million young people have joined the military in the last few days to protect the country from the U.S. and other enemies. 

The North Korean government held events across the country to create an "atmosphere of war" and recruit new service members. Students and workers lined up to enlist or re-enlist in arenas and a construction site. On Friday alone, more than 800,000 citizens signed up, as reported by the state-run Korean Central News Agency. The volunteers demonstrated their will to unify the two Koreas and "mercilessly wipe out the war maniacs" who threatened their country. This is a thinly veiled swipe at the U.S. and South Korea.  The two Koreas have been divided since 1945, and the North invaded the South in 1950. Although no

was ever signed, an armistice ended the three-year conflict in 1953. North Korea's mass enlistment follows the launch of its largest and most powerful missile between the U.S. and South Korea.
