“Truyện Kiều" movie adaptation to be screened at international film festival after failure at Vietnam's box offices

‘Kieu,’ a movie

Nguyen Du's Truyen Kieu (The Tale Of Kieu), will be at this year's Newport Beach in the U.S, one of the country's largest luxury lifestyle film festivals. 

Different from the

, the 90-minute movie from Kieu's life journey to focus more on the deadly between the three main characters, Kieu (played by My Duyen), Thuc Sinh (Le Anh Duy) and Hoan Thu (Cao Thai Ha), taking place in the 19th century.

The movie reportedly cost VND30 billion to make,

when it only earned VND2.7 billion after release at local box-office, not to mention barely any , and has to be moved to online streaming services.

Local moviegoers and reviewers criticized the film for its

pacing, questionable climax, poor CGI and of the characters.

Prior to release, ‘Kieu" also received

online due to of traditional Vietnamese attire and customs of the era. It will be shown at the festival on October 27 and its cast will appear on the red carpet before the and interact with the audience after the event.
