Unraveling the mystery of the 2021 cosmic ray "Amaterasu"

Described in a recently published article in the journal Science, the researchers have named the mysterious particles constituting this cosmic ray event "Amaterasu," after the mythical Sun Goddess who, according to legend, played a role in the creation of Japan.

"When we first detected this ultra-high-energy cosmic ray (UHECR), I was sure there must be a mistake because it showed energy levels unprecedented in the last three decades," said Professor Toshihiro Fujii, the lead author.
