Vietnamese exam for English proficiency not welcomed at home

such as IELTS and TOEFL, the Vietnamese equivalent VSTEP is not commonly used in the country.

With many international English proficiency exams postponed until November, students were tense, particularly those in their senior year of high school who needed the results to expedite their university applications. Major universities, such as

, were considering embracing VSTEP, a Vietnamese domestic counterpart of the English proficiency exam, to enroll students.

VSTEP is a four-part English exam that includes four sections: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. It seeks to assess students' English levels using the Vietnamese language proficiency scale established by

in 2015. The exam was created by (ULIS), a branch of Vietnam National University in Hanoi. According to a VnExpress study, ULIS was the only one of 51 Hanoi colleges to accept VSTEP certificates for admissions in the 2022 academic year. Only 28 Hanoi colleges accept VSTEP for graduation requirements. Nonetheless, nine members of the Vietnam National University HCMC have declared plans to include VSTEP into their admissions and curriculum in the next months.
