For a blunder, an elite Vietnamese referee was suspended

Ngo Duy Lan, Vietnam's only FIFA Elite referee, was punished for making a mistake during a V. League match between Saigon FC and Thanh Hoa FC.

Saigon was awarded

with three minutes remaining in the Saturday encounter. Nguyen Huu Son's shot struck Nguyen Trong Hung's , then his arms. Saigon was immediately penalized by referee Lan. According to , that was not because the ball impacted the body before striking Hung's arm when he was springing up, indicating that it was not and hence not a penalty for Saigon.

Lan is Vietnam's sole FIFA referee who has advanced to the Elite level, the highest in the structure.
