Third person 'cured' of HIV

Doctors in Düsseldorf, Germany, proclaimed a 53-year-old man cured of HIV following

- the third such instance.

Four years after

In 2008, the "Düsseldorf patient" tested positive for HIV. He was diagnosed with leukemia in 2011, which was cured with

, but it returned the following year. Therefore, in 2013, chemotherapy was used to kill off the blood stem cells in the man's that give rise to immune cells, including malignant ones, and then replaced them with donor blood stem cells.

Doctors discovered a donor with a mutation that impairs the CCR5 receptor, which HIV utilizes to infect immune cells. The man's immune system became HIV-resistant as a result of the transplant.
