Vietnam's GM Le Quang Liem got off to a slow start in an online chess competition

On the first day of the Airthings Masters online competition, Vietnamese GM Le Quang Liem lost two of four games. The 31-year-old

defeated Eric Hansen of Canada, tied with Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa of India, and lost to Russia's Vladislav Artemiev and China's Ding Liren. He was 12th in the 16-player event with four points , morning Hanoi time.

Liem, the tournament's

, will play Poland's Jan-Krzysztof Duda, Republic of Armenia's Levon Aronian, Azerbaijan's Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, and Holland's Anish Giri. He'll face chess king Magnus Carlsen on Tuesday.

The Airthings Masters event is the first in the major series of the 2022 Champion Chess Tour. The tournament will be held from February 19 to 26, and will include 16 players, six of whom are ranked in the top ten in the world.
