Vo Van Thuong elected Vietnam's president

Vo Van Thuong,

, was chosen president of Vietnam on Thursday, becoming the country's youngest president in history.

passed a motion to name Thuong president for the 2021-2026 term, with 487 of 488 deputies voting for him. He took the oath at the National Assembly Building in Hanoi at 10 a.m., promising to "stay completely loyal to the country, the people, and , and make efforts to fulfill missions assigned by the Communist Party, the State and the people." Thuong, 53, is currently the youngest member of , the country's highest decision-making body, as well as the Party's Secretariat's youngest standing member since 1976. Thuong took office just weeks after his predecessor, Nguyen Xuan Phuc, stepped down.
