Oscar 2024 nominations unveiled: ‘Oppenheimer’ leads

On the evening of January 23rd (Hanoi time), the official list of Oscar 2024 nominations was revealed, according to Variety. Christopher Nolan's film, "Oppenheimer," took the lead with an impressive 13 nominations, closely followed by "Poor Things" with 11 nominations.

Director Tran Anh Hung's work, "The Taste of Things," did not appear in the Outstanding International Film category, despite previously making it to the top 15 nominations.

At the age of 81, Martin Scorsese made history by becoming the oldest director ever nominated for an Oscar. His film, "Killers of the Flower Moon," received 10 nominations. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) surprised fans by excluding Leonardo DiCaprio from the Best Leading Actor category.

Unexpected names at the Oscar 2024 nominations include America Ferrera (Barbie) for Outstanding Supporting Actress and Sterling K. Brown (American Fiction) for Outstanding Supporting Actor.

"Barbie" received 8 nominations, but both director Greta Gerwig and actress Margot Robbie were excluded from the list. Despite being the highest-grossing film of 2023, earning over 2 billion USD globally.

The Best Leading Actor category witnessed a competitive race with actors Paul Giamatti ("The Holdovers"), Cillian Murphy ("Oppenheimer"), Bradley Cooper ("Maestro"), Colman Domingo ("Rustin"), and Jeffrey Wright ("American Fiction"). Among them, Cillian Murphy stands out as the most prominent figure.

In addition, Lily Gladstone ("Killers of the Flower Moon") poses a formidable challenge in the Outstanding Leading Actress category. At the Oscar 2024, she competes with Emma Stone ("Poor Things"), Annette Bening ("Nyad"), Sandra Hüller ("Anatomy of a Fall"), and Carey Mulligan ("Maestro").

For the first time, three films in the Best Picture category, namely "Barbie," "Anatomy of a Fall," and "Past Lives," are directed by women. However, only Justine Triet received a nomination in the Outstanding Director category.

The Oscar 2024 awards ceremony is scheduled for March 10th at the Dolby Theatre in Ovation Hollywood, Los Angeles (USA), with Jimmy Kimmel hosting. The previous Oscar ceremony in 2023 garnered 18.7 million viewers, a 13% increase from 2022, addressing ongoing efforts by the Academy to enhance viewership over the years.
