According to data compiled by CNN from local officials on September 29, the fatalities include 36 individuals in North Carolina, 25 in South Carolina, 17 in Georgia, 11 in Florida, two in Virginia, and two in Tennessee.
The storm made landfall in Florida on the evening of September 26, with wind speeds reaching 225 km/h, categorizing it as a Level 4 hurricane on the five-level Saffir-Simpson scale. Although Helene weakened as it moved inland, it still caused significant destruction in many areas.
As a result of the storm, nearly 2.5 million Americans are currently without electricity, according to Poweroutage statistics. Matt Targuagno, an official from the U.S. Department of Energy, emphasized that efforts are underway to restore the power grid; however, the process may take several days.
