Vietnamese gymnast Pham Nhu Phuong,

, has declared her retirement at the age of 20 after being excluded from the national team and has levied accusations against a coach for withholding prize money.

Born in 2003, Pham Nhu Phuong had shown immense potential in the field of artistic gymnastics in Vietnam. She previously secured two silver and two bronze medals at the 31st SEA Games, an impressive feat during her debut appearance at the Southeast Asian Games. In October 2023, Nhu Phuong brought three individual gold medals to Hanoi at the national championship. However, the gymnastics sensation shocked many by announcing her retirement at the young age of 20.

by the training and competition center in Hanoi, which resulted in her removal from the national team's training camp after a visit to the United States in December 2023. According to her, she had duly informed her coaches about the trip, but upon her return, she discovered that she had been disciplined for failing to report the overseas visit to the gymnastics department and the center's management.

Furthermore, Pham Nhu Phuong accused the coaching staff of demanding a 10% deduction from medal bonuses, 30-50% from performance bonuses, and a monthly contribution of 300,000 VND to a "strange fund" for the coach. The incident prompted a meeting organized by the gymnastics department in Hanoi on January 9th, where the discipline issues were discussed and attributed to an oversight by coach Nguyen Ha Thanh, who admitted to forgetting to forward Pham Nhu Phuong's request for approval.
