World Cup 2026 features 48 teams with record 104 matches

, announced that the 2026 World Cup will have 104 matches instead of the usual 64 games. This is due to with 48 teams taking part in the tournament. The 2026 edition will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, and it will be the first quadrennial tournament to include 48 teams. The final match of the tournament will be held on July 19.

The new format will maintain drawing four teams in a group instead of the proposed 16 groups of three. The latter proposal was rejected due to
