Scientists reached a key milestone in learning how to reverse aging

Dr. David Sinclair and his colleagues have finally answered the riddle of what causes aging after 13 years of research. Sinclair,

and co-director of the Paul F. Glenn Center for at Harvard Medical School, presents a new aging clock that can speed up or reverse cell aging in a paper published Jan. 12 in Cell.

Sinclair and his colleagues write in Cell that they can not only accelerate the aging of mice, but also reverse the effects of that aging and restore some of the animals'

. That reversibility provides that the primary causes of aging are not mutations in the DNA, but rather errors in that go astray. In what he calls the Information Theory of Aging, Sinclair has long suggested that aging is the result of cells losing key instructions that they require to function. "Underlying aging is information loss in cells, not just damage accumulation," he explains. "That represents in how we think about aging."

Sinclair revealed in 2020 that the procedure restored vision in elderly mice; the recent results show that the system can apply to the entire animal, not just one tissue or organ. Because

can be injected directly into the eye, he thinks that eye illnesses will be the first condition exploited to test this aging reversal in humans.
